Greenhouse Gas Emission Calculation and Reduction Strategy
Accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting is the foundation of any effective climate action strategy. Understanding how to calculate your emissions and implement targeted reduction measures is essential for regulatory compliance, customer requirements, and competitive positioning.
GHG Accounting Basics
The GHG Protocol
The GHG Protocol, developed by WRI and WBCSD, is the most widely used international standard for corporate GHG accounting. It provides comprehensive frameworks for measuring and managing emissions across three scopes.
Scope 1: Direct Emissions
Emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company, including combustion of fossil fuels in boilers and furnaces, company vehicle fleet, and industrial process emissions.
Scope 2: Indirect Energy Emissions
Emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the company. Typically the largest emission source for office-based and light manufacturing SMEs.
Scope 3: Value Chain Emissions
All other indirect emissions occurring in the company's value chain, including purchased goods and services, business travel, employee commuting, transportation, and end-of-life treatment of products. Often the largest category overall but most challenging to measure.
Calculation Methodology
The basic formula for GHG calculation is straightforward:
Emissions = Activity Data x Emission Factor

Verification and Reporting
Third-Party Verification
For credible GHG reporting, third-party verification by accredited bodies ensures data accuracy and methodology compliance. This is mandatory for companies in Korea's emissions trading scheme and recommended for voluntary reporters.
MRV Requirements
Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) is the systematic process for tracking emissions. Establish clear data collection protocols, documentation standards, and quality assurance procedures.
